Fresh Tech Story
A Leader in Flexible Manufacturing at Home in Traverse City
Cone Drive’s story began with a machinist in the Norfolk Navy Ship Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia when Samuel I. Cone patented new methods for making the double-enveloping worm gear. Licensed by the Michigan Tool Company in Detroit, this technology became part of the US Navy’s gunnery systems for nearly every ship built during World War II. Like many of the area’s successful advanced flexible manufacturing businesses, Cone Drive migrated to the Grand Traverse Region soon after the war, taking advantage of the expanding use of computer-numerical controlled cutting machines.
